  • Nursery Class 2-3 yr olds

Our dedicated room for 2 - 3 year-old children is an exciting way to start your child's education.  The curriculum is carefully considered, providing a safe and welcoming space for children to learn and thrive.  Currently, we have a maximum number of 10 children in the morning and 5 in the afternoon with one member of staff for every 5 children.

    Current hours for Owlet Class:

If your child has 15 hours of funding your child will be allocated a morning space (5 mornings of 3 hours) this operates from 8:40am until 11:40am.

If you are eligible and have the code for 30 hours, your child may be allocated a 30 hour space.  The hours for the 30 hour space are as follows:

    Morning (3 hours) 8:40am - 11:40am

    Afternoon (3 hours) 12:30pm - 3:30pm

Lunch club running from 11:40am until 12:30pm is available to book at £8 per day.  Your child will need to bring a packed lunch.

    Toileting and personal care

During your first visit to the class, before your child starts, the staff will be asking you about how your child is getting on with toilet training.  If your child is in nappies, you will need to provide extra nappies, wipes and cream for your child's use only, during their time in the class.

    A typical day...

No two days are ever the same in Owlet class - but there will be some areas that remain the same, such as our home corner and reading area. The timings here are very flexible!

8:40am Welcoming everyone into the class. We say goodbye to our adults at the door.

9 am Group time - songs, running through what is on offer in the room today, stories, action rhymes and exchanging news.

9:15am Exploring time - children will make choices and then explore the various activities on offer in the setting.  Staff are on hand to guide and extend their play, where, necessary, in order to make the most of their time in the setting.

10 am Tidying up - tidy away the materials they have been using and building a sense of responsibility for their environment encouraging them to co-operate and help others.

10:20 Snack and recall time.  Children review what they have been learning by talking about the activities they have chosen; developing communication, literacy and language skills. Children will be offered different fruit and vegetables daily that are provided free by the government.  This includes, but is not limited to: bananas, apples, pears, citrus easy peelers, mangetout, sugar snap peas, tomatoes.  The fruit and vegetables are delivered to us.  We will encourage your child to eat the fruit of the day, but they will not be forced.

10:40am Small group time. This is part of the daily routine that includes activities that have been planned by the nursery staff.

11am: Outside play; this is a time when the children will play freely outside, supervised and extended by our experienced staff.

11:30am The 15 hour children will get ready to go home, whilst those staying for lunch will get ready for lunch time: washing hands etc.

11:40am We will say goodbye to our friends that are leaving for the day and settle to eat our lunch with the 3-4 year olds.   Please provide a healthy lunch box for your child.  We often find that parents overfill their child's lunch box - a sandwich, piece of fruit and a yoghurt, for example, is probably sufficient - but you will know your child best.  We are not able to heat up food for your child.  Please do not provide your child with food that contains nuts.

12:30pm Quiet time.  Some children may still need a nap at this point of the day.  They will be provided with a sleeping mat and there will be quiet activities on offer for those children who no longer need a sleep.  This will be discussed with you.

1pm: Exploring time and then tidying up

    2pm: Small group time

2:20pm Outside exploring time and then tidying up

3pm Story and getting ready to go home

What will my child need to bring?

    • Your child will need a waterbottle - please fill this at home with water or weak squash (no fruit juice or fizzy drinks)
    • Packed lunch (if they are staying for the paid lunch slot)
    • Extra clothes (in case of toilet accidents, or getting wet/ dirty when playing). Please make sure that this includes extra underwear and socks!
    • Extra nappies, wipes, cream etc if your child is still in nappies
    • A warm coat when it is cold - we will still be playing outside
    • Wellies and an all in one waterproof to make the most of the mud kitchen!
    • If your child is intolerant to dairy you will need to provide an alternative milk (but not nut based) for your child to have during snack time.  Please make sure that this is clearly named.

What will my child need to wear?

    • We ask that your child wears our uniform on their top half - jumper or cardigan with the school logo and a white polo shirt (with or without logo).
    • Your choice of leg wear.
    • Trainers or closed shoes - no sandals, crocs or heeled shoes.

    When can my child start?

Your child is eligible to start the term after they turn 2.  For example:

    • Your child's birthday falls from 1st September - 31st December:  your child would be eligible to start in the SPRING term (January).
    • Your child's birthday falls from 1st January - 31st March: Your child would be eligible to start in the SUMMER term (April).
    • Your child's birthday falls from 31st March - 31st August: Your child would be eligible to start in the AUTUMN term.

What happens when my child turns 3?

Your child will stay in the 2 year old class until at least the term after they turn 3.  If there are spaces in the three- four year old provision, your child will then take up one of these spaces. If there are no spaces available, your child will remain in Owlet class. Where there are insufficient spaces available, this will be organised by age. You will be informed if a space does become available.
